Thank You for a SUPER Volunteer Day!

Thank you to everyone who came to the volunteer day on Saturday at our farm at the Awbury Arboretum. We had a great turn out and everyone endured the humidity to transplant scallions and weed celeriac. The scallions are in perfectly straight rows, and the celeriac is weed-free! Thank you!

Thank You! Volunteer Day and Potluck

What an amazing turn out for the volunteer day and potluck on Saturday! This was definitely our most well attended volunteer day ever! And thank goodness, because we had a Herculean task of weeding the parsnips! Imagine a sea of green, now imagine you have to find a needle in a hay stack, and now imagine the CSA parsnip harvest depended on it- that was the task that everyone was up to on Saturday. And we succeeded; the parsnips are now looking better than ever! Thank you to everyone who squatted, crouched, and knelt alongside those parsnips for hours! And also a big thank you to Blaise who is a long standing shareholder, and showed up with his own weed wacker to tackle a multi-year project of clearing the fenceline. To celebrate a successful day of work, we all shared a feast at the picnic tables and enjoyed a beautiful summer evening on the farm.
Be sure to mark your calendars now for our next volunteer day,Saturday July 12th from 9:30 to 3:30 at our beautiful farm in theAwbury Arboretum. If you haven’t been to this farm, this is a great opportunity to come and check it out.

Successful Volunteer Day. Thank You!

The rain held off and it was a great day to work on the farm (baring a little humidity, but hey- it’s Philadelphia!).  We started off giving the basil a facelift, to give it a renewed take on life!  It seems to be overcoming the downy mildew that was causing it to brown recently. Then we moved on to the peppers, many of which needed to be pulled and put in the weed pile because they are not faring well. With all the rain, the peppers are suffering from Pytophthora, a disease which causes the plants to wilt and die. Sadly there will be fewer and fewer peppers in the upcoming shares. While the group worked in the field, Bill weed-wacked all over the farm, a much needed job! A big thank you to everyone who helped out on Sunday: Jen, Steven, Sondra, Carl, Nolen, Rosi, Carlos, Mariana, Kate and Bill.

Volunteer Day: Great Success!

Thank you to farm apprentice Emma, as well as shareholders/coop members: Ali, Denise, Jim, Sue, Jo, Duncan, Leah and Matilda who helped weed EVERY tree in the orchard on Saturday. The weather was overcast which was actually nice and cool for the hard work that was in store. Many of the vining weeds were so aggressive, they were growing up the cages surrounding the trees (for deer protection), and were starting to get entangled with the top branches! The orchard is in a MUCH better state thanks to everyone’s hard work!

June 1st Volunteer day and Potluck

Now that the CSA has started, our farm team spends two full days every week harvesting. This significantly cuts into the amount of time we can tend to the field planting and weeding. This means we need your help! We have a job for everyone- kid friendly weeding, physically demanding tomato stake pounding, or wheel barrow repairs for the handy fix-it minded volunteer!  You can join us for any amount of time between 11 and 5pm on Saturday June 1st. Bring a lunch, water and sun protection. Sign up on the online work calendar to get credit for your hours toward your CSA and/or Weaver Way 5% discount.

After a good day of work, the best way to celebrate is with good food and good company. Join us for our season kick-off potluck from 5-6:30pm. Bring a dish to share, and your own plate, bowl, cup and cutlery. Friends and family welcome!

Volunteer Day and Work Commitment

I would like to give a special thank you to farm intern Matt Steuer who managed the volunteer day last Saturday while I was away. Also, thank you to everyone who came and participated. It looks like a significant amount of work was completed! This is a great step toward cleaning up the farm as the end of the season gets closer.
Work  Commitment
This was the first year we had a work commitment at the farm and it has been  a huge help throughout the season. If you have not completed your 4 hour work commitment, you still have the rest of October to schedule a time with me to come and help out at the farm. Generally anytime 8am to dark, Monday-Saturday is an option.   If you don’t believe you will have time to complete this commitment by the last pick up day (November 2nd), please send a  $35 check or cash to Weavers Way or drop it off with someone staffing the CSA pick-up. You can make checks payable to Weavers Way Farms, and mail to 559 Carpenter Lane, Phila. PA, 19119

Volunteer Day Success

Saturday’s volunteer day got off to a rocky start but was a huge success in the end. About ten minutes into the volunteer day a pop-up thunder and lightening storm came through, drenching volunteers! It passed quickly though, and in no less than fifteen minutes everyone was back in the carrot bed. The rain was actually helpful and made the weeds come out much more easily. The carrot bed, as one CSA member put it, “accidentally” got away from us and was a huge undertaking. Everyone was fearless in the face of spiny weeds and  we got a tremendous amount of work done. Here is a big thank you to Nancy, Liza, Rich, Marin, Brad, Joanna, Duncan and Sondra for all your help. I would like to offer a special thank you to Julia and Leila, our youngest CSA members to volunteer who kept us all smiling. The carrots that we weeded will be ready in a few weeks. You can think of them when you enjoy them in your share! We certainly would have lost that carrot planting without everyone’s help on Saturday!

Volunteer Day

Last Saturday’s volunteer day was the best turnout we’ve ever had for a volunteer day! Thank you all who participated. I was amazed at how quickly we turned our meadow-engulfed bean beds into an orderly, weed-free haven. Thanks to everyone’s hard work we WILL have edamame in this year’s share! Thanks again to Mary, Robert, Tony, Pete, Anna, Emma, Ralph, Denise, Ning, Carl, Jen and Nancy.
